Sorrento Mesa is San Diego's Tech Center and San Diego County's largest supplier of employment, as these companies employ and house many employees in the area. In addition, many residents work in San Diego's downtown business district or go to Webster University's San Diego Metropolitan Campus, which is a part of Sorrento Mesa.
Sorrento Mesa is a convenient location for beach-goers as well, as the beach is just a short hop and a skip away. Torrey Pines State Reserve and Torrey Pines and Del Mar Beach are all easily accessible from this area. The nearby shopping opportunities for residents include Westfield University Town Centre, a major shopping mall, and the smaller centers of Costa Verde Shopping Center and Renaissance Towne Center.
South of Sorrento Mesa lies the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station, which houses the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Aircraft Group 46, and Combat Logistics Company 11. This base is on 23,116 acres and in split into two parts: an undeveloped east portion used for training and a developed western portion which provides primary base and airfield services. As the military base is nearby, many Sorrento Mesa residents has some sort of involvement on base.
